New member jurying takes place twice a year (usually the second Monday of March and September) at the Faulkner Gallery, downtown main library 40 E. Anapamu. The next jurying for prospective new members will be on September 8, 2007 from 10:00am to 12:30pm. The entry fee is $25. Pick up work between 3:00 and 4:30pm. Your work will not be protected if you are late picking up.

Artists need to submit five pieces of two-dimensional artwork, or two pieces, plus three 35 mm slides, if three-dimensional artwork. The slides must be labeled with the dimensions of the artwork.

Two-dimensional artwork consists of oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor, collage, small assemblages, hand pulled prints, and photography (including altered photography). Three-dimensional artwork is any sculpture in any medium, including original molds, large assemblages, or hand assembled jewelry.

Three judges will review all entries. At least two are outside of SBAA membership. All three are professionals in the art field.

All artwork will be assigned an identifying number. Your name and all other descriptive material will be hidden. No accompanying written material (except for photographers as detailed below) is allowed.

For photographers only: to help the judges evaluate what went into your work, please provide a brief written description (without your name and no more than one page) of what techniques you personally used in their creation. These may include: the shoot itself; development of film, if used; scanning techniques, if used; work up of scanned image; printing by either traditional or digital means; and anything else pertinent to how you created/produced your image.

All artwork must have been completed within the last five years. It may not be a copy or close adaptation of another’s work, unless it is described as “after” or “inspired by” in the title. Work based upon ideas or inspirations initiated in a classroom and developed independently is considered acceptable. Work developed with the assistance or direction of an instructor is not sufficiently creative and is considered unacceptable.

The judges will look for professionally presented original work. The five two dimensional pieces should all be in the same medium – that is five watercolors, five oils, and the like. The pieces should relate to each other in style, theme, and subject matter. They should be framed similarly as though they would hang together in a show. All glazed work should have light colored mats and be framed. All artwork should be wired and ready to hang. Frames without hanging wire or with hanging clips or saw-tooth hangers will be considered unacceptable.

The judges will look for originality and creativity, technical expertise and knowledge of the selected medium, coupled with an adequate understanding of composition, color, balance, and form. Their opinions and choices are based on each one’s knowledge, experience, and personal preferences. If you are not accepted this time, please try again.

Accepted applicants will be offered membership in the SBAA upon payment of the annual membership fee (currently $35/per year). Other membership privileges include the opportunity to enter any SBAA juried shows, and to exhibit at Gallery-113. Note: some photographic artwork may not be hung at Gallery-113.

Members showing at the Faulkner must sign up for four hours Gallery Watch or pay for a substitute sitter. Members showing at Gallery 113 are encouraged to be trained as Gallery Sitters and to volunteer to help support the Gallery.
