Dear Joyce Walters and Bob Rowley,
Thank you for inviting me to be juror for the January SBAA Faulkner gallery show. It was a great pleasure. While we were all a little disappointed with the quantity of work that was submitted, the overall quality of the art was very gratifying. I have been watching the Faulkner shows for years and the artwork gets better all the time.
I look for several things in choosing work for an exhibit. Primarily I look for work that is complete in it’s own terms; it looks finished, consistent and competent in the execution of the artist’s ideas. The subject matter is not as important as originality and strength in the composition, with balance and harmony in the colors chosen. In this exhibit I saw traditional materials used in new and interesting ways. I was also impressed with the use of newer photographic and digital media in a restrained and tasteful way.
The tough part about judging this exhibit was the shortage of awards and the large number of deserving works. I could have used at least 10 more ribbons.
To the participating artists I say, “Keep up the good work.”
Sincerely,
William Fedderson
