Dear Santa
Barbara Art Association Members:
I would like to thank the Association for inviting
me to be the juror for the September and October shows at the
Cabrillo Pavilion Arts Center. Almost 25 years ago I used to
help move paintings during the jurying. One time the juror was
the late Channing Peake, accompanied by his young wife. He was
thoughtful and decisive and he complimented one of my paintings
with an award. Because of memories like that it is an honor and
a pleasure to be the juror for these shows.
The "Big Picture" show that now hangs at the Cabrillo
is dynamic and colorful and has already received at least one vote
of approval from a prospective bride who pronounced herself happy
to celebrate her upcoming wedding among your art work.
Because of the space limitations, this was
a difficult show to select. For those of you who went to the
trouble to submit work that was not accepted, I offer my apologies,
and a little bit of advice. It may be that if I was not moved
or made a connection with a painting, it was my fault, and another
juror might have seen it differently. My advice is to always
go to the trouble of submitting more than one work, that way
the juror can better make a decision in the context of your ability
and your point of view.
Finally, I want to salute all the Art Association
board members and committee volunteers. Through the years, your
commitment and hard work have provided the community with many
opportunities to enjoy the artwork of so many talented Santa
Barbara artists. So, as an artist, and a member of the community....
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Arturo Tello
